They say you become a youngster the moment you see the chapel dome peak over the horizon while returning from summer cruise. Spoiler alert for our newly-minted "plebes-no-more:" You're going to spend more time staring at chipped paint and electrical wires than you will at chapel domes. And as a mid, you will always be in the way. Always... On the mess deck. In the head. In the berthing. And yes, even in your rack. There is no escape.
A non-humorous, actual word of advice (for those who will hear it): Just be good dudes (and dudettes). Learn from your running mate (He/she has a lot of experience in the field.) Have a positive attitude, be humble, and don't be afraid of getting your hands dirty. Think of yourself as a functioning member of that ship's team for the month you're with them and put in the effort. Don't linger at the tables after meal (eating up space), let sailors who actually have a job to do get in line before you, and leave everything better than you found it. Happy trails to '18, '19, and '20 and a big congrats to '17 for getting ready to join the fleet. Proud of all of you.
